Compliance-by-design

What is it and what are the advantages?

Published on Tuesday September 20, 2022 by Anna Andreatti

In the steel industry there’s a great number of standards and requirements that material need to comply with throughout every step of the supply chain. This can slow down processes and increase the chance of errors. But then how can we increase the efficiency and reliability of the steel supply chain? In this blog post we’ll discuss our solution.

What is compliance-by-design?

When talking about requirements compliance you have probably heard of “compliance-by-audit”. With compliance-by-audit, requirements are checked during the audit, therefore, later in the production. Reports are created once the audit is done and are reviewed manually. The need for control is high and a lot of time is spent on quality assurance.

On the other hand, a more efficient and secure option is “compliance-by-design”. What is the difference with compliance-by-audit? Compliance-by-design literally means that the compliance to the rules and requirements is automatically verified “by design” during the production.

How do we make this possible? In the SteelTrace platform, thanks to the blockchain technology used, requirements are digitised, data is entered and then compliance is automatically verified in real-time.

What are the advantages of compliance-by-design?

But now, let us explain the main advantages of compliance-by-design.

1. Predefined rulesets

Rules are already integrated and automatically checked in the system. This reduces the need for controlduring production of the material, making the process less time-consuming and reliable.

2. No more paper review

Manual check of requirements is replaced by automated verification. Automated verification provides real-time review of the whole supply chain. In this way data is available instantly and human errors are minimized.

3. Automated report creation

Since data is verified automatically in real-time during the production process, reports can be also created automatically and instantly at the same time.

4. Prioritise prevention

Non-conformities or errors are detected immediately, and the necessary adjustments can take place early in the production.

5. Less hold points in QCP/ITP

Risk of hold points is reduced, as everything is checked along the way when data is entered. This ensure that the process runs smoothly and becomes more time efficient.

6. Pre-onboarded ecosystem

Onboarded users and companies get cryptographic keys associated with them. Companies indicate who is qualified to endorse the provided information. No one can sign in the company’s or user’s name without the qualified inspector/QA being present. In this way data can’t be tempered with and is fully traceable.
